Musings of a VPE

Esteemed colleagues of D’Utama Advanced Toastmasters Club,

It has indeed been a very taxing couple of months with a lot of us heavily involved in regular meetings as well as contests, volunteering our time in various capacities and investing so much energy into our efforts. Our very own club has sought your assistance for the implementation of one regular meeting in August and two successful competitions after that. Yes, we are all tired. In fact, we are all exhausted. Yet, something keeps me going.

It brings me great delight when I walk into Rm1.08 KDU College and it is pitch black (because I’ve always been the first to arrive!). Standing in the room, I close my eyes and the lights come on in my head. I see people, familiar as well as unfamiliar faces. After a day at work, the best thing about that picture is that it is full of smiles, and I’m talking warm, genuine smiles here. In one corner, I hear laughter. It is a hearty laugh. No prizes for guessing who it is. =) In another corner is the excited chatter of our young ladies. In the front, Wei Seong is busy “getting people to behave”, trying to ensure the smooth running of our meeting. While these people say ok, and nod in agreement, his stern look gives away that he still worries. Poor guy.

I reluctantly open my eyes. Reality sinks in. I turn on the lights. I smile, because it dawns on me that that wasn’t a mere figment of my imagination. In just over an hour, that same film will play again. Except that this time, it plays in reality. With my eyes open. And that is DU Advanced.

Fellow Toastmasters, if there is anything constant in my life, it would be DU Advanced Regular Meetings. Nothing else, apart from birthdays, has been able to capture so many dates in my calendar for the rest of this year, through to all of next year. That’s something special, isn’t it? ‘Cause no matter how bad things are going for you, no matter how volatile the share market is, or even if you’re absolutely elated about your new promotion, all those things are temporary. DU Advanced is here to stay. And we’ll always be there for you, in good times and in bad times. The choice is in your hands, whether or not YOU want to take this gift that we are offering.

Think about it. And then contact me. To volunteer for a role next week. Enjoy your weekend!

Yours sincerely,

Deborah Hoe, CTM
