D’UTAMA ADVANCED TOASTMASTERS CLUB
12th. July 2007
(1st meeting of New term)

Began : 1940 on time !
Maiden Presidential speech welcoming ACB Soh Fong Wai, Area Governor B2; and ACS Dennis Wee, Area Governor B1.
TME Lim Lay Kun related her weekend encounter at Lumut resort - even though she could not swim, she was brave enough to take up the challenges in canoeing!
She then pre-empted the audience that a new format would be used for today’s meeting.
Open evaluation will be conducted before the assigned evaluator's evaluation.

101 Session – Introduction to Blogging by DTM Tham Chee Wah who professionally delivered a very educational and informative session for everyone who was raw in "blogging."
He even captured a live photograph with his handphone and sent it to the blog site as a live demonstration, the photo of audience came out minutes later and appeared on the screen .

All four speakers were told to explain how and why they prepared for their speeches.

1st speaker;
ACB Stuart Tang on Interpersonal Skills # 4 titled "The Coach".
He prepared the speech a year ago, was unable to complete them earlier as he was busy as a Area Governor of previous Term. He presented his speech fluently even though physically
suffering from "slip disc".

Enacted role was played with Calvin Lim and at the end of the session he solicited
comments from the audience. The speech went overtime much to the chagrin of the timekeeper DTM Peter Siew.

OPEN EVALUATION by audience - issue should be notified first.
- speech was too fast trying to fit into the time frame.

Evaluated by ACS Kimmie Goh.- Stuart did a good job on speech outline, a good brief
on coaching.
Role play – a good coach is one who listens, friendly.

2nd speaker ACB Foong Weng Tuck on Storytelling on the Folk Tale – the year of the cat.
With this year’s theme of going Beyond Self, as an EXCOVPPR, to set an example he is doing his speech assignment.

OPEN EVALUATION – Started off with gusto but dwindled towards the end with his voice volume.

He told us a folk story on how and why the Chinese calendar only has the 12 animals as icons, minus the cat, who came in as 13th placing !

Speech was evaluated by CTM Deborah Hoe.- comments were story was entertaining .
Title – captivating.
Pauses applied well.
Started strongly but voice softened and at one time not audible to audience.
Points to consider – animation to be used.

3rd speaker CC Samantha Teoi explained that she was doing this assignment as she had not spoken for quite some time. Samantha spoke on "AIDS" and this was the first time she did research on this Wildly spreading disease called "AIDS" .

She revealed some very alarming and frightening statistics on the millions of people infected by AIDS, including children under 15 years of age.

OPEN EVALUATION : Time management to be improved.

Her speech was evaluated by DTM Sheila Wong –comments from evaluator that this was a heavy topic yet when presented in a relaxed mood, and with humour.
Successful display of topic on screen with PowerPoint was very educational.

Points to consider – speaker should identify and inform of source of information.
- speaker perhaps could relate a personal story
- time management.

4th speaker ACB Maria Yap on "Accepting an award" from the Special Occasion Manual.

Speaker portrayed as a retired teacher with 32 years of teaching experience and she was to accept the Prestigious "Golden Spear Award" from Dato Mohd Rosli @ Lee Wei Seong.
Speech was filled with emotion and touched the hearts of audience.

Speech evaluator was Area Governor B1 ACS Dennis but due to time constraint, AG Dennis would personally brief the speaker .

OPEN EVALUATION handled by GE, ACB Nancy Liew who commented that the open evaluation was of "Friends helping friends" motto to help speakers to improve.

By adopting the Open Evaluation before the assigned evaluators' evaluations, the assigned evaluator should not repeat what pointers commented at the open evaluation.
